Remembering Ian Curtis, who died 33 years ago

May 18, 2013 :: 01:00 PM EDT

Today we remember british singer and songwriter Ian Curtis, who was the lead singer of Joy Division. 33 years ago (May 18, 1980), Ian committed suicide after suffering from epilepsy and depression.

His last performance was on May 2, 1980 at High Hall of Birmingham University. This was the only time the ban performed their song “Ceremony“, which was later recorded by New Order.

Many tributes have been made to this band and also several films. One of the latest (and one of our favorites) is Control, directed by Anton Corbjin. If you haven’t seen it, we definitely recommend you do it. Listen below to “Shadowplay“, which is actually covered in this film by The Killers.
